Artificial intelligence (AI) is sometimes referred to as a herald of the fourth industrial revolution. That revolution is already here. Whenever you say "Hey Siri" or glance at your phone in order to unlock it, you're using AI. Its current and potential applications are numerous, including medical diagnosis and predictive technologies that enhance user interactions. As chairwoman of the U.S. House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, I am particularly interested in the potential for AI to accelerate innovation and discovery across the science and engineering disciplines.

As nations across the world slowly reopen their economies after extended lockdowns, businesses will need to hit the ground running to operate in a new abnormal. Finland's Artificial Intelligence Programme challenges enterprises to commit to the ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI). It encourages enterprises to draw up their own ethical principles for AI that would guide how AI is applied and developed in the enterprises in fair and trust-building ways. At first, the aim is to get at least 300 enterprises sign up for the challenge. "The use of AI will increase and become everyday practice in enterprises at a fast pace. This trend also raises concerns about whether the new technology respects our values. Finland's Artificial Intelligence Programme aims to make AI a success factor for Finnish enterprises, and having a set of ethical principles is an asset for a responsible business," says Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilä.
